In the current display panel manufacturing industry, in addition to traditional LCD technology, the emergence of OLED technology in recent years has also added luster to this field. So today, we will briefly compare these two technologies with everyone, so that we can better choose products that are suitable for us.

What is LCD technology?

LCD is a display panel technology that uses liquid crystal to control transmittance technology to achieve color display. LCD is made of two flexible polarizing materials and a layer of liquid crystal solution, using backlight or reflector to produce color or monochrome images. The backlight layer is responsible for emitting white light, while the positive and negative circuits are responsible for energizing and generating voltage. The liquid crystal layer deflects liquid crystal molecules under the influence of voltage to block some of the light emitted by the backlight layer.

For example, a liquid crystal layer with shading function is like a louver. When the curtain is lowered, light enters, and when the curtain is pulled up, light is blocked.

louver

The liquid crystal layer follows this principle: when the positive and negative circuits generate voltage, the liquid crystal molecules inside the liquid crystal layer are deflected, and the amount of light passing through is controlled by the deflection angle. The more light passes through, the greater the color values of red, green, and blue; the less light passes through, the smaller the color values of red, green, and blue. Then, by adjusting the color values of the three primary colors of red, green, and blue, the final color of the pixels can be controlled.

What is OLED technology

The full name of OLED is organic light-emitting diode. OLED does not have a liquid crystal layer or a backlight layer, so it is called self luminous because it emits light on its own. So by applying different voltages to each diode, we can control the color ratio of red, green, and blue in the sub pixels, thereby controlling the color of each pixel. Each pixel can be independently controlled to turn on and off, so there is no need to turn on the entire backlight layer like a LCD screen. When the phone is locked, some pixels can be individually lit up, which makes power consumption lower.

Characteristics of OLED products

1. Contrast refers to the ratio of brightness between black and white in a picture. OLED itself does not have backlight, and each pixel is independently controlled, so the power supply for displaying black pixels can be directly cut off, resulting in no light emission at all.

2. When OLED screens display a pure white screen at startup, they only consume more power than LCD screens. Unless you are trapped in white for a long time, OLED has a longer lifespan.

3. OLED screens do not have a liquid crystal layer, so they are naturally not limited by the temperature of the liquid crystal layer. OLED screens switch colors between colors with a short response time and almost no trailing phenomenon.

4. Compared with LCD, OLED screens are thinner and lighter in thickness because they do not have a backlight layer and a liquid crystal layer.

Disadvantages of OLED products

1. asy burn-in screen: OLED screens have a risk of burn-in (also known as "screen saver failure"). If the same image or content is displayed for a long time, it may leave long-lasting afterimages on the screen, reducing display quality.

2. Higher cost: Compared to LCD screens, OLED screens have higher manufacturing costs, which typically results in higher prices in the market.

3. Relatively short lifespan: OLED screens have a shorter lifespan compared to LCD screens, especially the blue emitting material of organic light-emitting diodes, which may lead to uneven brightness or pixel degradation after long-term use.

Characteristics of LCD products

1. The backlight layer of LCD is used for emitting light, and other components are not easily damaged.

2. Due to the unique light-emitting characteristics of LCD screens, the LCD backlight source is an independent white LED backlight source, so there is almost no flicker.

3. The production process is mature, and the production and replacement costs are relatively low.

4. The electronic valve of LCD screen has a relatively single function, so its lifespan is longer.

Disadvantages of LCD products

1. Low contrast: The contrast of LCD screens is relatively low, and the black color is not deep enough, which may affect the picture quality when watching film and television content.

2. Angle dependence: LCD screens have a large dependence on viewing angles, and color and brightness may change when viewed from different angles, which is not ideal for group viewing or tilting devices.

3. Luminous backlight: LCD screens require a backlight module to illuminate the screen, which can result in a dull black color in dark scenes, also known as the "gray effect".

Summary and Suggestions

In summary, LCD screens and OLED screens each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and consumers should weigh their own needs when purchasing devices. If you pursue higher contrast, thinner and lighter devices, and can accept higher prices, then choosing OLED screen devices may be more suitable; If cost, lifespan, and brightness are more important, then LCD screen devices may be more suitable.
